Activities and main project results
1. The impact of climate change on the development of floods in coastal urban areas has been theoretically studied; the known knowledge on the peculiarities of floods in a urbanized coastal region with complex geometry and complex action of several natural factors is systematized - pouring rain, river spill, sea storm, extreme waves; known and approved in the world practice modern tools for numerical modeling with their fields of application, as well as methods and technology for physical modeling of floods are analyzed.
2. A detailed digital model of the terrain and adjoining buildings of a region with specific low terrains located in Varna has been developed. The model includes Karantina Beach in Asparuhovo District, Varna, and adjacent gullies and canals.
3. A two-dimensional numerical model was built by MIKE'21 SW and pilot tests were conducted to model the floods from the pelting rain, coupled with storm sea waves.
4. Tests have been carried out with a developed numerical model in the MIKE FLOOD environment, using a detailed digital elevation model of the Karantina Beach, Asparuhovo region. The combined flood scenario of the area involves the spill of a nearby gully as a result of heavy rain and storm sea level rise.
5. A numerical model was developed by the SWASH software, which also modeled a combined flood (rise in water level) in the same coastal area in Asparuhovo region, Varna.
6. A numerical model of protective seawall overtopping at Beilun coast, China, under coupling action of storm surge and waves has been developed. The numerical model is implemented in the SWASH software environment.
7. A physical model tests of the seawall overtopping were carried out in the long wave flume of dimensions (175x1,2x1,8) m at the State key Laboratory of hydrology, water resources and hydraulic engineering in Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (NHRI.
8. For the physical modeling of seawall (dyke) overtopping, an original laboratory simulation method and coupling procedure were developed and applied in the NHRI (synchronous modeling of water level changes and extreme waves of 4-day natural storm).
9. Three business trips have been made - to 4 Bulgarian scientists at the NHRI Institute (2 in 2017 and 2 in 2018) and 3 Chinese scientists at the BSHC, Varna, in 2018, for participation in the scientific seminar on the project.
10. The results of the numerical and physical modeling of floods in the two test areas in China and Bulgaria are presented in two scientific reports presented at two international forums in Europe and Africa – 14-th International Conference on Marine Sciences and Technologies - Black Sea’2018 in Varna, and и 4-th International Symposium on Flash Floods in Wadi Systems - ISFF’2018 in Casablanca, Morocco.
11. A bilateral scientific seminar with invited external participants was organized and held in BSHC, Varna, where Bulgarian and Chinese members of the project team gave 9 presentations with the project results.
